Football First Touch
Develop cleaner technique through simple repetitions, good body position, awareness and purposeful touches.
About this lesson
A first touch sets up everything that happens next. Instead of simply stopping a pass, try to cushion the ball and guide it toward the space you plan to use. Start slowly with a partner or a wall so you can practise receiving from different angles. Scan before the pass arrives, then take your second action without rushing.
Practise in a safe space at a pace that feels comfortable, and ask a coach or teacher for help when needed.
How to practise football first touch
- Before the ball arrives, glance around to see space, team-mates and opponents.
- Move into the ball's path and open your body toward where you want to go next.
- Use the inside or outside of your foot to meet the ball softly.
- Guide the first touch into useful space instead of stopping the ball directly underneath you.
- Move immediately after the touch into your next pass, dribble or shot.
Helpful coaching tips
- Practise both feet when possible.
- Scan before receiving the ball.
- Add speed only after the technique is controlled.
