Short Passing Technique
Develop cleaner technique through simple repetitions, good body position, awareness and purposeful touches.
About this lesson
Accurate short passes depend on balance, clean contact and choosing a useful target. Use the inside of your foot for a controlled pass and point your standing foot toward where the ball should go. When practising with a partner, alternate feet and vary the distance only when your accuracy is consistent.
Practise in a safe space at a pace that feels comfortable, and ask a coach or teacher for help when needed.
How to practise short passing technique
- Look at your target before you receive or strike the ball.
- Place your standing foot beside the ball and point it roughly toward the target.
- Turn your kicking foot outward and keep the ankle firm.
- Strike the middle of the ball with the inside of your foot.
- Follow through toward the target and move after your pass.
Helpful coaching tips
- Practise both feet when possible.
- Scan before receiving the ball.
- Add speed only after the technique is controlled.
Common questions about short passing technique
Where should the standing foot go when passing?
Place it next to the ball in a balanced position, roughly pointing toward your intended target. Keep the pass controlled rather than swinging as hard as possible.
How do I practise short passes alone?
Use a suitable wall and clear space, aim for a marked area, control the return and repeat with both feet.
